Orange County Sanitation District is a public agency that provides wastewater collection, treatment, and disposal services for approximately 2.6 million people living in a 479‐square‐mile area of central and northwest Orange County, CA. They operate two adjacent wastewater facilities and 15 lift stations to treat an estimated 185 MGD of residential, commercial, and industrial wastewater.
Each plant provides processes for solids handling, primary treatment, sludge treatment, secondary treatment, odor control, and resource recovery via cogeneration.
The Plant 1 and 2 processes, collections systems, and the Plant 1 electrical control systems used the CRISP SCADA platform with end-of-life Modicon Quantum PLCs running obsolete ProWorx NxT software.
The District engaged Enterprise Automation on a four-year contract to migrate to a modern controls platform. This project leveraged EA’s expertise in creating SCADA and PLC standards and with Schneider Electric systems. In this project, engineers converted the District’s existing PLC standards from Concept to Unity Pro, while ensuring continued compatibility with the central tag database, SCADA system, and engineering standards.
