V Core Renewable Energies focused on utilizing stranded biogas to generate usable renewable resources. As a small EPC contractor, they provided turnkey solutions to customers while keeping development and construction costs lower. Some of their facilities and designs converted biogas to power, natural gas, and vehicle fuel. They hired Enterprise Automation as their project’s sole controls integrator.
The LRI landfill in Graham, Washington, generated approximately 3 million standard cubic feet per day (SCFD) of landfill biogas, which had historically been flared, resulting in the loss of valuable energy. To address this issue, V Core contracted Enterprise Automation to develop a control system for a turnkey biogas power generation facility designed to produce 4.5 megawatts (MW) of continuous power. The project included various processing components that treated and delivered the biogas to three Caterpillar 3520 generator sets, allowing the generated power to be exported to the local electrical grid via custom switchgear.
Enterprise Automation designed and configured the entire control system. This included the control panels that served as the electrical interface between the control system and various field devices, such as valves, transmitters, and pumps. Additionally, Enterprise Automation designed the SCADA server infrastructure, which acted as the backbone of the onsite control system, incorporating virtualized servers and networking. The team also developed the control narrative for the facility in collaboration with V Core engineers. Using this narrative, Enterprise Automation programmed the system logic with Allen Bradley PLC products. CitectSCADA was employed to provide operators with a central visual interface for controlling and monitoring the facility during operation. This system enabled remote monitoring, allowing plant owners and engineers to support the facility when it was unmanned or short-staffed.
